Buddy Media, which powers the Facebook presences of both the NFL and its 32 teams, conducted research on Facebook Page performance for both the New York Giants and the New England Patriots during Super Bowl XLVI. We found that Facebook fan growth picked up for each team when they led during the Super Bowl, culminating in a massive rise in fan growth as the Giants were crowned champions.
Key findings from the Buddy Media research:
- The Giants acquired 2X the number of fans from kickoff until midnight on Super Bowl Sunday. Both teams saw fan growth spikes while they led in the game, and the Giants saw tremendous growth right as they were crowned champions.
- Interaction on each team's Page was highest within 30 minutes of sending out a Post. Buddy Media defines interaction as a combination of ‘Likes,’ Comments and ‘Shares.' Each team's Wall had an interaction rate 3.8 times higher as compared to 30 minute intervals in which there were no Posts.
- Interactions were four-to-five times higher after the Super Bowl ended than they were before and during the game. This makes sense, as many fans went to check on Facebook after the game ended.
